Amar's Development of Project Management Skills

Amar Samra is an Assistant Project Manager at Arc Partnership,  a joint venture between Nottinghamshire County Council and SCAPE, formed in 2016 to support the council in creating an efficient, safe and sustainable land and property portfolio.

We spoke to Amar from Arc Partnership who tells us more about his Assistant Project Manager course and how it's helped him in his role.

Tell us about your career journey with Arc Partnership so far

I began my journey with Arc Partnership in a temporary role as a Business Support Administrator. From the start, I had aspirations to become a project manager. As my temporary contract was coming to an end, I was offered a permanent position as an Assistant Project Manager - a great opportunity that aligned perfectly with my career goals.

How did you get involved with the Assistant Project Manager course?

It started with conversations between my manager and Hayley from our Learning and Development team. We explored various training options and discussed what would be most beneficial for my role. Together, we decided the APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ) was the best fit to support my development.

What have you learned from the course, and how are you applying it in your role now?

I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of project management principles. Before the course, I had a general idea of many concepts, but now I understand them in more detail and, more importantly, how and when to apply them. For example, I now clearly understand the distinction between projects and programmes, the full project lifecycle, and how to effectively manage stakeholders, scope, and change control. These are all things I use in my day-to-day work.

How did Arc Partnership support you during your course?

Arc Partnership supported me by adjusting my workload so I could take two days out for the training and exam. I also received invaluable support from colleagues who had previously completed the course. They shared their experiences and helped me get to grips with the material.

"I feel more confident and better equipped to contribute to project planning with clients, partners, and colleagues. And I’m already looking forward to taking the next step in my learning with APM."
