John Ambler completes the CTO Academy's Digital MBA for Technology Leaders
We speak to John Ambler, Head of ICT at SCAPE, who has completed the CTO Academy's Digital MBA for Technology Leaders: a demanding, year-long executive development programme built for technology leaders moving from hands-on delivery into strategic leadership.
What is the course about?
The course spans nine modules across leadership, business strategy, commercial acumen, product development, information management, finance, data analytics, and digital innovation. I completed it alongside my full-time role, putting in more than 200 hours of study (lectures, reading and revision) around the day job, with the time and resources to do so backed by SCAPE.
I passed all nine modules with a median score of 90%, finishing nine days ahead of my original target and closing out on my highest mark of the programme. The breadth of the course was, for me, the real point.
"It would have been easy to focus only on the technical modules, given my background. But the leadership, strategy and communication material is exactly what closes the gap between running a technology function and leading one. Finishing strongest on those was the most encouraging sign that the range is sinking in, not just the depth."

The qualification itself was never the destination. A certificate on its own doesn't change how you operate day to day. The real test is whether you can point to real decisions, made differently, because of what you learned — that's the part I'm focused on now. It's a good example of SCAPE Group's Expert value in action: staying curious and actively pursuing learning to build confidence and maintain professional competence, not just collecting a certificate. It also reflects our Accountable value: I took ownership of my own development rather than waiting for it to be asked of me and I hold myself to the same standard of owning the outcome as I would any other commitment.
What advice would you give other's thinking of doing a qualification alongside work
My advice to anyone weighing up serious study alongside a demanding role is characteristically practical: don't wait for a quiet period that isn't coming. Protect a realistic amount of time each week and actually defend it, and don't chase a perfect score — a complete, imperfect module beats a perfect, unfinished one. The compounding is the whole game: small, consistent progress beats heroic effort every time.
That next phase is already underway: building a structured way to track where the course's thinking is genuinely showing up in his everyday work, rather than treating the MBA as a closed chapter. It's a habit I'd recommend to anyone taking on similar study — the return on a programme like this comes after the certificate.
